Managing within the Law
This Managing within the Law course details the most important legal issues that managers need to be aware of to perform their jobs effectively and to comply with the law. The Advanced course builds on the Basics course by addressing additional topics that are somewhat more complex.
Geography Covered: Americas | Duration: 40 minutes
Summary
Traditionally, managers could rely on the doctrine of "at will" employment to control their workforce. This doctrine allows an employer to fire an employee for any reason or for no reason 1, giving employers significant power over working conditions, hiring, compensation, etc.
While the "at will" doctrine is still a fundamental principle of U.S. law, workers have gained significant legal leverage during the last century. Laws regarding labor relations, minimum wage, overtime, safety and discrimination/harassment — to name just a few — have changed the supervisor-subordinate relationship dramatically.
Workplace laws continue to grow in number and complexity at both the federal and state/local levels. These laws place increasing responsibilities on employers and, by extension, managers. Without a sufficient understanding of these laws, managers can make costly — and sometimes devastating — mistakes.
