From the start, drafting in CoCounsel was designed around a straightforward premise: lawyers do not just need text generation, they need work product they can stand behind. In its early stages, CoCounsel Legal offered a drafting experience that assisted the lawyer in multiple ways – from checking citations and surfacing drafting language, to providing comparative document analysis and redlined agreements. Importantly, drafting capabilities within CoCounsel have always focused on grounding outputs in trusted legal guidance and surfacing firm knowledge so attorneys did not have to generate first and verify later.
That is a meaningful architectural choice. Many tools can produce language that looks good. The harder and more valuable solution is producing a draft that reflects authoritative sources as part of the reasoning, not as an afterthought. CoCounsel Legal has consistently emphasized this difference: Westlaw and Practical Law are part of how the work is developed – the same way a skilled lawyer’s thinking is shaped by the sources they trust.
While current drafting capabilities have served legal professionals well in terms of efficiency, they were still asked to choose specific tools, processes, or prompts to help them accomplish their goals. CoCounsel Legal’s drafting strategy aims to eliminate that hidden tax while maintaining authoritative content as the necessary foundation of the work. This means lawyers should be able to describe what they need in plain language (the matter, the document, the goal), and CoCounsel Legal determines the right approach, grounded in trusted sources, and executes, end-to-end.

The journey from multi-step to single query
Today, CoCounsel Legal enables end-to-end drafting in two ways: generating drafts based on a legal professional’s own internal precedent documents, and generating drafts based on a Practical Law Standard Document. Both entry points allow lawyers to generate full documents that are grounded in trusted content, whether that’s their organization’s own templates or Practical Law documents drafted by expert attorney editors.
From there, lawyers can edit the output directly in-app, which reduces the “draft here, paste there” loop that creates risk and burns time.
This shift was the start of the real breakthrough – clearing away steps in the drafting process and allowing the lawyer to review, refine, and make the calls only they can make. The workflow becomes simpler, more continuous, and more defensible by design.
A reimagined drafting experience
The CoCounsel Legal drafting experience in the Microsoft Word add-in will soon let lawyers describe what they need in plain language – no skill selection needed – and CoCounsel Legal will build a plan and execute complex multi-step workflows, including drafting transactional documents, working with redlines, and completing playbook-based review, without requiring the lawyer to bounce between tools or manually stitch steps together. Even complex, fact-intensive litigation drafting can be handled by the next iteration of CoCounsel Legal. Tasks like drafting demand letters and complaints, preparing oral arguments, and responding to discovery requests or pleadings can be completed with a single prompt.
This is the “single ask” direction in action. It is not a collection of features. It is an experience that is a true conversation-based workflow, where one request turns into a guided, defensible outcome.
An intuitive experience for the future of legal work
Drafting is one of the earliest, clearest signals of the broader CoCounsel Legal trajectory. CoCounsel Legal is being rebuilt around how legal work actually gets done, where authoritative sources and firm knowledge shape the work as it is produced, and where the experience increasingly moves from multiple steps to end-to-end execution from a single query. Whether you’re working within the CoCounsel web application or CoCounsel for Microsoft Word, the result is not just a better draft. It is a clearer future for legal AI, and CoCounsel Legal is leading the way.
