A Practice Note that provides an overview of the key California employment laws and human resources issues affecting startups, entrepreneurs, and growing businesses. It covers critical areas such as employment-related filing and reporting requirements, hiring and payroll considerations, and offer letters and employment contracts, including special considerations for founders and management executives. It assists new and expanding businesses in navigating California's complex legal landscape and mitigate potential compliance risks and addresses the development of essential workplace policies, such as anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies compliant with the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), leave policies under the California Family Rights Act (CFRA), and legally required workplace postings and employee notices.
